White Knight [Build Log]

Hi all,

Just wanted to start this thread to document my new build I'm working on, and to get some feedback as well.

As you may have guessed from the name, White Knight is going to be centered around a white theme, and will be built in the white NZXT H440. I'll be using it for a variety of purposes; I fly a lot in X-Plane (flight simulator) with a triple monitor set up, but I also do a lot of 3D graphics work, mainly in Blender, along with some video and photo editing. I haven't played many games, but I'm looking to start getting into some games soon.

I'm working and saving up over Christmas to buy the parts. Once I have the parts outlined above, I'm going to water cool it. I already have an XSPC RX360 for the front, and I plan on putting a EX360 in the top (I'll confirm clearances when I get the motherboard, which should be tomorrow). The aim is to buy the CPU and cooler next, and then use parts from my current machine to have the computer up and running and then buy the rest of the parts as I can. After that I'll get the PSU so that I can have both machines running, though my old one will be off Intel Graphics, but as it won't be my primary system it won't be too much of a problem.

In regards to storage, I'm thinking of going with 2 512GB SSDs in RAID 0 instead of the single 1TB. This would double the chances of disk failure, but it would also double the performance and look better. As the H440 has two SSD sleds on the power supply shroud. Then for mass storage of video mostly, I'll use a NAS.

One question I do have, is whether I'll be able to use my old (well not exactly that old, 4770K and GTX 780Ti) as both a NAS and a render farm and external display. Both Blender and X-Plane run on all 3 operating systems so I just need to find NAS software that runs on Windows or Linux. If you have any suggestions it would be much appreciated.

Any feedback on the system is always appreciated, especially in regards to fans, I haven't decided yet what I'm going to use.
