Hey everyone, first time build-logger here.
I've only built myself one computer before and It was relatively simple - CM 212 evo on a locked 3770, originally an asus 660ti that I recently upgraded to an EVGA ACX FTW 970, on an atx-size board in an atx-size case. In short, it's a great daily-and-games computer, but nothing besides.
With this build I wanted to challenge myself. Not only that, but I'm planning to spend time with family next year (they live overseas) and thus carrying an atx-sized case halfway across the world doesn't seem very appealing to me.
So when a mate told me that he was selling his CM Elite 110 for $20, I snapped it up in a heartbeat. This thing is so small and adorable, and I couldn't resist its square-box-like dimensions.
Now as far as the build is concerned, this case poses a few problems: I can't use a graphics card longer than 22cm, so that's 90% of the non-reference market made unavailable. I can't use a CPU cooler over 70mm tall, so no air-cooler, as I plan to overclock and slim-air-coolers just aren't going to be sufficient. I can already see that cable management is going to be a nightmare but hey - that's all going to be part of the fun.
This is the cpu I'm going to use (how unsurprising):
The famous Unlocked Pentium. Considering it's unlocked I do want to get as much performance as I can, thus I plan to water-cool. Wether I choose an AIO or not, however is still up for consideration. An AIO will allow me to pack the case in my carry-on and use it in the Qantas Club lounges as I wait for my flights, as they are sealed units and thus it won't matter if I tip the case on its side etc - something I can see being a serious problem if I was to install a custom loop - I would have to completely empty it before I leave and then refill it when I arrive.
However, the appeal of a custom loop to me is considerable - not only will it yield greater performance, but I've always wanted to build one and they look awesome. I have plenty of time to decide (as I save up money) so any input as to whether the performance gain with the G3258 using a custom loop or not is worth it would be appreciated. If I do use a custom loop, I might as well integrate the GPU - but considering there is only place for a 120mm radiator in the case (and a thin one at that for the sake of ram clearance), I don't think the loop will have enough cooling headroom for a GPU and CPU in it. I could mount an external radiator of course, but that would defeat the purpose of this build as it would add considerably to the external dimensions.
I have made up some led sticks that I bought from my friendly auto-parts retailer. Considering cars run at 12v, too they will work fine and were hell cheap - they also happen to be PRECISELY the right size for the sides of the case, funnily enough. Was just a matter of removing the 12v-socket plug and attaching some molex connectors I removed from my atx case. Planning to have a red-and-black themed build. Red is my favourite color Sure there's no window, but red light coming out the grills would still look cool I think. Like It's "alive" if you know what I mean.
One of the first things I did upon getting the case was remove the blue led from the power switch. Not only is CM's obsession with blue detestable, but the hdd activity light on the side is red... so I decided to remove it and fit a red LED from my local electronics shop. Came out a treat - here it is plugged into my atx mobo.
I have also just taken delivery of a CM SickleFlow X 120mm fan for the single front intake (also red led). Great CFM and 2.9mm/h20 makes it an awesome all-rounder, a good quality when it's the only fan in the case - however i'm planning to fit smaller fans to aid exhaust (40/80/92mm) after the build is semi-complete and I have a clear understanding of the packaging restrictions.
At the moment, I already have a Crucial M4 SSD from my aforementioned atx-case (swapped for an M550 - mother of god this thing is fast) and don't plan to add any other drives due to space - I already have an external drive I can store crap on. Other than that, the case is pretty damn empty atm lol. These are the parts I plan to purchase - any tips for or against would be greatly appreciated.
Mobo: Asus Z97I-PLUS
PSU: Silverstone ST45SF-G 450W SFX Fully Modular
GPU: My favourite parts shop only has a single (read:ONE MODEL) GPU that will fit available that is underneath a GTX970 spec and that is more powerful than a 750ti (i.e. within my budget and appreciated performance) - the Gigabyte 960 ITX. So I guess It's my only option for the moment, however I plan to make some phone calls soon to see exactly what's available. I could buy internationally, but every store I found is based in the US where, for whatever reason, the shipping costs to Australia are just idiotic. I can't seem to find any online stores closer to home.
RAM: I have a set of 2x4gb G.Skill Ripjaws X sticks in my current atx case and...well...it's ram, what can I say, it does what it does. No reason to change.
CPU Cooler: Well as for CPU cooler as I said I haven't decided to go custom or not, but if I choose a 120mm AIO - what do people recommend? Apart from the Corsair H80i which seems to be far ahead of the game in relation to other 120mm AIO's (and priced accordingly) I can't really see any benefit of choosing one over another. Going to spend a lot of time thinking about the CPU cooler....
Should also mention I ordered some custom Demci magnetic dust filters - so freaking cheap at $6 each and reasonable postage. Black mesh with red borders, so should jazz up the exterior somewhat along with giving better dust protection of course.
Will be posting updates as I build/buy more stuff
