My Rig as it stands - complete (well not really - one never is!) for now

Well, I fist put this system together in early 2013, in that time she has had a whole cup of tea down the top grille while running, been the only thing to survive a massive power surge in my house and she has been the most stable, reliable and robust PC I have ever used, never mind owned!

Anyway - to the build!

When I first built my rig the parts were:

CPU: I7 3770k

Cooler: H80i

Mobo: ASUS P8 Z77 - V

RAM: 2x Corsair 4Gb sticks @1600 MHz

GPU: MSI 660Ti  PE 2Gb

PSU: Corsair HX 750 (I will keep this PSU forever, I love it so much!)

Case: Corsair 650d (that one with the large open grille at the top....)

SSD: Sandisk Extreme 128Gb (it was cheap okay?!)

HDD: WD Blue 1TB

After building her I decided to see how I had fared on the silicone lottery, and to my delight everything in the system overclocked like a champ! The CPU can hit 5.1Ghz with 1.42V if the room is cool enough and the GPU can hit 3.7Ghz on the memory and I have only ever bothered to take the GPU to 1250MHz as the memory clock on the 660Ti has much more of an effect, thanks to its restricted mem bus.

Although I down clocked the CPU back to 4.5Ghz as I actually want it to last a good while!  Like this I happily ran games mostly maxed out at 60 FPS with no problem for around 2 years until 2 weeks ago, where I decided I had saved up enough to make a couple of upgrades...  So with (some) cash on the hip, I got myself another 2 Gb sticks of RAM, although I decided I wanted to have a bit of lighting on the board so I went for the crucial Balistix Tracer Orange/Blue kit. and as you may guess, it took a fair bit of messing around to actually get the pc to boot as my 2 sets of ram were running with different timings and clock speeds, but an hour, and some sloppy timings later she was back to her usual stable self! So, what next? Well I decided that a bit more GPU horsepower is never a bad thing, but I was stuck with a hard decision.... I could either get another 660Ti from MSI (OCD - THEY MUST LOOK THE SAME!) and have around the same performance as a 970, for £80 (around $120) but get stuck the 2Gb V-RAM or spend the extra money (which I don't really have!) on a 970. After some research I decided to go the cheaper option and SLI my current card - also I was interested to have a go because I have never ran 2 cards before! Once the card was in, I  found that the factory overclock from msi was too much, but -20MHz later the card was sorted, also to make up for this, the memory also Oc's well :)

I have been running a few benchmarks and on many occasions, beating single 970 scores on well optimized titles and also dealing with the extra heat - Glad it's winter here! - I am worried about my video ram limit though ...

Thank you for taking the time to read my story of my PC so far and I plan to update this as I make make any more changes - Hopefully a few years more yet though! :D

P.S I apologize for the image quality - they were taken in 4K but the file size was obviously far too high - so I have had to re render them in 8 bit...

Heyoo peoples!

So I'm moving home pretty darn soon and can finally move my computer out from the horrid little corner that it's stuck in and I was thinking I may as well go ahead and make it awesome at the same time.

Here's the rig I'm working with:

CPU: i5 4690K
GPU: EVGA GeForce GTX780Ti Superclocked ACX
Mobo: ASUS Z97-A
RAM: Mushkin Blackline FrostByte 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3-1600
PSU: Seasonic X-Series V3 650W
SSD: Samsung 840 EVO Series 120GB
Storage: 2x 2TB Seagate Barracuda

The theme I'll be running with are Changelings. Shape shifting bug-like villains from the TV show My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic (yeah yeah). Primary colours I'll be working with will be turquoise/green and black and the finished build will feature commissioned art from one of the fandom's many talented artists.

The case I'm working with is a black Fractal Design Define R4. I've been running it for a few months in it's current state, really excited to finally have a chance to make it stand out.

Here's how it currently looks: (excuse potato photos, all I have is my Z3, no decent lighting)

Setup:

The Rig:
To buy:

-3x Noctua NF-A14 Bought!
-Cable Sleeving
-Black Perspex Sheet (for PSU shroud)
-LED lighting
-Other stuff I've forgotten

I don't know if this qualifies as a build....but...

I've been brushing up on some modding knowledge and such and have come to the conclusion that I should try out some of these things on a "junk" stock system that's currently sitting in my cellar. If everything goes well hopefully I can upgrade the guts of this into a nice light gamer, or something that better suites my needs for budget rendering (yes i said it.)

Since i'm currently a student this may take a much longer time than i'd like. So without further explanation... here's the build/mod explanation.

Current Savings until next component: $30

LONG OVERDUE!

This build was done last year but has had different video cards in it before I found my 770's that I use now so that I was happy GPU wise. So I don't have really any build log. Just pictures and the fact that I spent 5 years on a super snappy AMD Athlon build to have this system and set up I have now. I have had alot of problem with my mom when I was saving up all the money and blew it on building a new computer. But in the end she was happier with it then I was cause she uses it for work when she needs to work from home.

I would like to apologize in advance for the Toaster quality photos I don't own a decent camera so I took them with what I could(Ipod Touch 5th Gen with HDR on)

Note:

1. This is NOT supposed to be a good looking rig, this rig is made for one purpose only as of now: deliver high performance for production work and some gaming at a reasonable price

2. This rig is bound to change at anytime as some of the parts are used or lower quality due to compromises made to fit the budget

Summary:

This is my first custom built computer (though I have owned many brand computers before), this will be used mostly for video editing and production works but occasionally for some gaming. Many of the parts chosen here might get replaced very quickly depending on how fast I can save up on some money.

I'll also be reviewing anything from this build that I was able to buy brand new right on the LTT forum (CPU, Mobo, RAM, XP941, NH-D14 SE2011... etc) if theres anything else that you want to see reviewed from this build, I'll be happy to do so if I have the time.

I'm really hoping to be able to finish this build in time for my birthday (I don't technically have a birthday this year but you get the point... some time in the end of February)

In Progress First Custom Rig

Alllllrighhhhttyyy. I've always wanted to do a build log, and I figured, what better way to do it than with my first custom rig? Anyways, I don't seem to have pictures quite yet, but pretty soon I'll have some up. This build is in progress and will be upgraded quite a lot for a while. I really enjoy building and upgrading, so my whole setup, including keyboards, mice, parts, monitors, and everything should be upgraded in the near future. Now on with the post!

2-3 months ago I ordered parts for the rig. I got an i3 4150 paired with an H97M Anniversary and 8GB 1866MHz Kingston Fury Series ram along with an EVGA 500w PSU. I had a 160GB Blue drive laying around, and on top of that, I have a 500GB external Caviar Black drive that I'm using for other stuff such as school work. I plan on getting a 1TB Barracuda drive off eBay for $30 or new for $50. I had a Lian Li PC-601 laying around. Older model from like 2002. Pretty soon I plan to upgrade the 2.0 ports to 3.0 ports on there or getting another case such as the Shinobi. Pretty soon I'll be getting either a 660ti or a 960. Updates with pictures soon to come! Opinions on the build?

FrankenPC 2015 Edition

So. I'm new to the LTT forums so I'll start with a small intro. I've been building systems since about 1997, started with the old K6 platform and Thunderbirds. Started water cooling with the Athlon XPs and first S939 X64s. I sold my old faithful i5 2500K system about two years ago and instantly regretted it. I just recently sold off my old Phenom II system and switched to a laptop but now I'm back to desktops.

I don't do normal rigs. I do bizarre. I love cable management and I make em stupid fast while keeping the cost low. So. FrankenPC is born. And if Linus sees this yes its the same one from the Lifehacker Q&A.

FrankenPC is a Core2Extreme QX9650 on an EVGA 790i FTW DPM board. This same board has been sitting in a closet since about 2008 after being the fourth one back from repeated RMAs and I got so pissed off I locked it away.
I slapped it into a new Anidees AI6 case with a Corsair CXM600 and I'm resurrecting my old Swiftech ApogeeDrive water block (replacement pump incoming) and a 240MM rad. Also have a shiny Gigabyte GTX 970 to round out the crazy.
I got a G.Skill 2X4GB DDR3 1600 kit working (surprise! Board does support 4GB sticks!) and at the full 1600MHz too which confirms my suspicion that newer 1.5V RAM is much better quality than the 1.65V junk from late 2007.
I shall post my current benchmark numbers later with my E8400 test CPU plus pictures of the current setup so all can marvel at ridiculousness incarnate.

Hello all Nerds! :D

I finally have joined the forum in hope that I will find nice people here to help me with the tips I need to finalize my gamer build.
To make it easier for me to monitor my thread here, I will post my two builds in the same thread.
The "Main" and "NAS"

The specs for my main computer/gamer build is this:

OS: Win7
MB: ASUS Maximus VI Formula
CPU: Intel Core i7-4790K @ 4.4GHz at the moment
GPU: Dual ASUS AMD Radeon HD 7970  @ Stock clock (reference cards)
CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-D14 with x2 Noctua NF-F12 iPPC-2000 fans
RAM: Corsair Vengeance 1600MHz 16GB ( 4x4GB )
SSD's:
Corsair Force GS 128GB x2 in Raid0 (For OS)
Kingston SSDNow V300 120GB x2 in Raid0 (For Games)
Corsair Force LS 120GB as storages for VM VirutalBox drive files.
HDD: Western Digital Green 1TB (General small storage)
Case: Corsair Carbide Air 540 Cube
CaseFans: Corsair SP120 PWM Quiet Edition x6 (3 front intake, and exhaust 2 roof + 1 back)
PSU: Corsair AX 760 with all Black Individually Sleeved Cables
Screens: Dual AOC 24" LED e2462V
Peripherals:
Qpad MK-85 Keyboard with CherryMX Brown switches, Logitech G700 wireless mouse, Microsoft LifeCam SudioHD, memory card reader and some more crap...

The specs for my NAS build:

OS: FreeNAS 9.3 (Build. 9.3-STABLE-201412200530)
MB: Gigabyte GA-Z97N-WiFi (with dual GB NiC onboard)
CPU: Intel Core i5-4670K @ 3.40GHz with a vCore on 1.05 volt stable.
CPU Cooler: Intel Stock Cooler
RAM: HyperX Fury 1600MHz 16GB ( 2x8GB )
Case: SilverStone SST-DS380
CaseFans: Corsair SP120 Quiet Edition x2 (side intake) + Corsair 120 PWM from a H55 kit (rear exhaust)
PSU: SilverStone SST-ST45SF-G 450W
USB stick: Sandisk 8GB for OS.
HDD's:
Western Digital WD Red 1TB x5 in Raid Z ~ 4 TB usable storage as backup archive. (RaidZ is comparable to Raid5)
Western Digital WD Red 2TB x2 in Raid 0 ~ 3.6 TB usable storage as media share archive.
Western Digital Caviar 500GB as temp drive for SABnzbd.
etc: SDM PCIe SATA II 300 RAID 2P (SiL3132)

This machine is setup to manage my media archive with Plex Media Server, SickRage for a PVR-function on TV-shows, CouchPotato for updating the movies.
And SABnzbd to handle the "updating-traffic" from SickRage and CouchPotato.
It's a really nice way to auto-manage the system and working right now on a setup for either OwnCloud or Syncthing for the backup solution from my main pc (and laptop). Not 100% sure on what will fit my needs best yet.

And here is the pictures of the main rig. :)
(Will try to manage a couple of pics on the nas this next weekend.)

Hi Folks,

Just built my first computer from scratch.

I owe everything I know to watching endless Linus Tech Tips build guides and really want to thank his team for giving me the confidence to give it a go.

I would say that one thing I have noticed no one mention, which has been a life saver for me, is that a lot of the parts that are in a half hearted shop built computer are easily transferable to a new rig as a place holder for future upgrades. If, like me, you lack patience and a massive dump of money to really glut out on something awesome in one go I would say that there is no good reason to hang around.

I bought my operating system, case, power supply, HDD, motherboard and processor which although not cheap still came to about  a third of what my tower once finished will cost. Using the old RAM, graphics card, optical drive and HDD made it very easy for me to start my machine and better yet get a feel for the process itself. Albeit not optimally, the machine works damn near perfectly and it is only because I really want to push the envelope gaming wise that I will need to add anything at all (besides the RAM because fuck 6GB right!).

I would add the caveat however, that I researched endlessly and built a machine with an overall plan in mind.I would not have ploughed on and made poor purchasing decisions to accommodate an outdated processor for example just to speed things along. I also made sure that the old and new parts would be compatible before ripping the old machine to pieces. Like all things in life the hard work should be done in preparation.

It go's without saying that this post will be less than interesting for experienced forum members and I hate to think that I am patronising newbies like myself, but after asking a question and getting a great response back from this community I felt that I should attempt to contribute something. So for all those on here thinking about building for the first time I hope maybe that I have added something useful to your first build experience... and have fun.

Kind regards...

First new build in a long time. GTS 8800 were all the rage the last build i made... Basically, I am looking for a relativly budget build that will last me at least 3 years. I have done some reaserch, but I'm sure im missing things. Im firmly intel and Team green. I know about the recent news on the GTX 970s. The benchmarks are still impressive. I am also just fine with 1080p gaming, but i may want to upgrade to 1440p in the near future. I have mouse, keyboard, monitor and headset. Thanks in advance for any help you can give. This is right at my budget. I really dont want to spend to much more.

So I guess we'll start of with the specs:

  • CPU: Intel Core i7 4790k
  • CPU Cooler: Coolermaster Hyper 212 Evo
  • Motherboard: Gigabyte Z97P-D3
  • Memory: 12gb DRR3 (2x4gb HyperX Fury | 2x2gb Kingston ValueRAM)
  • SSD: 240gb Crucial M500
  • HDD: 1tb Seagate Barracuda
  • GPU: MSI R9 270 Gaming 2gb GDDR5
  • PSU: Corsair CX750m - 750w Semi Modular Power Supply
  • Case: Phanteks Enthoo Pro

Quick Information:
The reason for the mixed RAM & Mid-range GPU is this; they were both re-used from my old PC. Now the RAM I am really not bothered about, as it performs really nicely and it's still 12gb... The Kingston stuff isn't the best as it;s only 1600Mhz, but when I care enough about it I'll just buy another 8gb kit of HyperX Fury.
The GPU was reused simply because I didn't have the funding to replace it at the time and it was the nesest component in my old PC. I will be replacing it next month when I get paid hopefully, and I still get decent FPS on high end games so it's not a major concern at the moment.

I know my cable-management isn't the best, but it's far from the worst. I plan on getting sleeved cables soon so I didn't spend too much time on this, but I made it look nice. Please ignore the disgusting fingerprints that the flash made obvious, I've cleaned them lol! Hope you like my build, comment your opinions!
