The idea behind the Build
The idea has been around for quite a while. Sadly, I already couldn't
really put together my last build myself, due to my dwindling fine
motor skills and I see no reason why I would expect it to be any
different this time around. As a result there of I didn't spend too
much time thinking about computers for a while. However when the SFR
was revalued I realised that the time was right. Thanks to my truly
shite fine motor skills, I will be relying on my close relatives and
friends to help me doing the actual building of the system. I know
what needs to be done I began fiddling with my first computer when I
was 10 and by now I'm 23, but sadly my body is really letting me down
so as previously mentioned I will be relying on some help for the
actual building of the rig.
What I'll be using it for, is mainly as a multimedia center together
with a 100hz 46” Samsung LED TV. I'm slowly getting sick of having to
take my Laptop into a different room each time I want to use the TV.
Each time that I do so it's a lot of work and since I'm in a
wheelchair If I drop an external HDD, which there is a real chance of,
that's quite a loss.
I also plan on using it as form of a personal home wide cloud and as a
general storage system.
Since it will be located right next to the TV, it can't really have
too many LED's, although I like builds with lots of LED's. A PC shaped
disco ball would be way too distracting. Which is also why it needs to
be reasonably quiet, I doubt I can make it really silent, but I'll
give it a go.
As I don't really have fine motor skills, or a usable reaction time, I
don't really plan on using it for gaming, for the time being at least.
Other than a few good oldies from my past such as Empire Earth, Age of
Empires 2, Stronghold, Stronghold Crusader, Sims 3... and so on. Which
I'm hoping the Intel HD 4600 GPU can handle.
Since this is the first post to this build I wont go on about all the
components, most of them I picked very carefully I wish I had put more
thought into the PSU, but I'll give an explanation as to why later on
if the reason isn't obvious.
The visuals will be pretty simple other than the NZXT cooler the build
has no special LED's. Which in of it's self nearly kills me, I love
over the top whacky builds that look like an aliens mother ship has
landed on earth and is trying to hide. So basically it will just look
like a normal NZXT Phantom 530. since it will look so basic I have no
idea if anyone will care, but I thought I'd give it a go.
There will be Pics so don't abandon ship quite yet, if you haven't
already done so.
So far I have received the four HDD's and I just received three
packages I have yet to open. (they look like they're in good shape so fingers crossed that all is well.)
Beginner's Luck
So, after a handy back-pay bonus this month, I decided to treat myself and finally splash out on components for my first build.
The specs:
Intel i5-4690k
Gigabyte gtx750ti black edition
Asus z97-ar mobo
Corsair AX860i
Avexir core series white 8gb @ 2133MHz
3x Samsung 840 evo 120gb SSDs in RAID 0 (hopefully)
So I'm aware this is a strange build. The 750ti will be a 970 in a few mnths and the PSU is simply to be future proof (another kit of avexir will be joinin the 970 giving me 16gb total) there is also a western digital 4tb coming at some point for backup of the raid array and mass storage. I shall keep this thread updated as I go along.
Bear in mind it's my first build, and first forum post so any tips and/or tricks would be greatly appreciated
Post your old builds.
Old Heart, New Body - 1st Build
Old System
Case: Thermaltake M9
Mobo: EP45-UD3
CPU: Intel Core2Duo E8400 (stock cooler)
Ram 2x2GB DDR2
HDD; 512Gb (now replaced with 2x256GB SSD)
Drives: 2 x LG dvd
Fans 2x120mm blue led, molex connected (now replaced with 2 non led with 1 in PWM mobo header and 1 molex with 7V regulator)
Psu: 400W-ish (possibly case psu)
New system
Case: Fractal Design Define R5 (no window)
Mobo: Gigabyte EP45-UD3 ATX
CPU: Intel Core2Duo E8400
CPU Cooler: Be Quiet Dark Rock Pro 3
Ram: 2x2GB DDR2
SDD; 2x256GB SSD)
Drives 1 x LG dvd
Intake Fans: 2 x Fractal Design GA-14 (case fans both on front connected to case fan regulator switch)
Exhaust Fan: 1 x Be Quiet Silent Wings 2 140mm PWM mobo connected
Psu: Corsair RM550
I've already installed the psu into case, and planned/managed cable run, flipped the door to open from left, and moved GP14 rear case fan to front, and installed Be Quiet fan in the back, unfortunately i couldn't connect the Silent Wings 2 fan to the fan control on the case because the connector is a small 3pin female plug and the Be Quiet fan is 4pin PWM.
(sorry about these 3 pics, taken on a crappy phone (i know, no excuse in this day and age lol)
Finally got my cpu cooler last Saturday morning, got it home and the jitters hit me. What if i do this and kill it :-(
So i logged on to WoW for a few hours Speedfan 4.50 had the GT630 (passive cooled) @ 67deg and the cpu @ 52deg at load
I finally turned off my old pc about 1am and started gutting it
Then placed the SSD's on the 2 sleds behind mobo plate
installed the dvd drive ( i really like the thumb screws for installing in the 5.25 bays)
@ 3am i started on the cpu cooler (attaching the mounting brackets)
after a good mornings sleep - the moment (more like couple of hrs) of truth
Being a 1st timer (read total noob), i installed the mobo, thinking i'd then attach the cooler......WRONG.
The Dark Rock Pro 3 is an ABSOLUTE HULKING BEAST of a cooler than takes up about a third of an ATX mobo.
total overkill for this system, but future ready. Never mind the fact that, aparently, you're supposed to do this outside of the case LOL
only issue i had was that i couldnt get the ATX 12v 8pin through the grommet top left of case and after installing cooler that corner of the mobo can't be reached ( going to open it up again and try removing the grommet and see if the cable will fit trough then. it currently runs across the back and diagonally to the psu and even though it's a non windowed case i know it's there and it's bugging me :-(
It's looking nice now
after last pic..... the moment of truth
IT'S ALIVE .... YAY ME
While it's still got the old heart and lungs, i have completely surpassed my objective of building a quiet pc, This is absolutely silent. At 1am if i turn an ear to the pc, lean in and strain the hearing i can barely hear the whisper of the 2 GP14 case fans in the front, then i turn the case fan control to the middle, and it's dead silent.
the cpu is now running over 12 deg cooler, and the gpu a cpl less too thanks to lower ambient temps inside the case.
I have soooo got the bug now, and am really looking forward to upgrading mobo, cpu, and ram (telling everyone to just give vouchers for particular pc store for b'day), so who knows - maybe this year
thanks to all the forum members for the posts i've read. lots of advice/tips/encouragement there.
thanks also to the techtubers for keeping us informed too
Updated build
This is a new updated build from my old NZXT Phantom 410. While the 410 worked great as a case, the airflow in the R5 is much better, the sound proof, and everything is much better!
I upgraded from a CM Hyper 212 Evo to a Corsair h105, kept the same motherboard and cpu. Sold my Gigabyte 770 to a friend that wanted to SLI, and got myself a Gigabyte G1 Gaming 970. So far it powers everything on ultra at above 60fps.
Also upgraded my Power Supply from a Raidmax (I know, they're not a good PSU manufacturer) and got myself a Seasonic Platinum. I was originally gonna get the EVGA G2 like my buddy has, but it was too long and didn't allow me to put a 140mm fan on the bottom. I know I'm stubborn but Seasonic is one of the best PSU makers out there along with the EVGA G2.
I'll add more pictures later on.
I've been thinking about moving the radiator to the front. Does anyone have any experience with this? And can I do a push/pull setup in the front. I have 2 Noctua ippc 140mm fans in the front right behind the dust filter so I don't know if that hinders aynthing

The Hand of Nod
So I'm building a gaming/streaming/audio recording computer to also use for school tasks (such as Word/Powerpoint/Excel/etc) and while I originally had a pcpartpicker build called "white lightning" all set up, I decided to change a lot of the parts and go from a Black/White/Blue build to the more traditional Black/Red build since there are more quality parts available in that color scheme (and I do have a bit of a preference for MSI mobos). I chose this particular name because I grew up with the Command and Conquer games and I always thought that Nod had some of the coolest buildings and vehicles.

My Rig!
May not be nothing spectacular but it suits me. http://pcpartpicker.com/p/s6r799
The evolution of Loreley (warning, potato camera and messy cable management)
Since my original machine (first built in the middle of 2013) there have been quite a few changes, so I thought I'd do a build/change log on it now. Meet Loreley:
The very first version, Loreley 1.0 if you will. It was a major upgrade for me since I was coming from my old core 2 CPU and a GT 9800. Upgrading to a modern (and overclocked) i5, a gtx 770 and double the ram was quite significant, 1080p gaming on modern games was finally possible. The case was one of those "because I can"-things, but more on that later. I kinda lost the original pictures, but just imagine the sexy ACX cooler from EVGA here.
Then I got a 1440p monitor (mainly for work) and the 770, while still very capable, wasn't quite enough anymore. That and my urge to finally switch to an AMD GPU sealed the deal: I got myself a fancy R9 290. I actually managed to sell my 770 for a very reasonable price, so this upgrade came in very cheap (280€ for the R9 290 while I sold my 770 for 220€)
Fast forward several months, we're close to the 900-series launch and the prices for the R9 200 series drop quite significantly, crossfire suddenly seems like a very tempting idea. I switched to a beefier PSU and got myself the second R9 290 for 200 bucks while praying that crossfire actually works properly and that I can deal with the additional heat (the answers to these questions would be hell yeah and yes).
In the meantime I switched the SSD for a larger model and donated my old SSD to my laptop.
And just last week this thing happened, a new case and a bunch of proper fans were bought. I couldn't stand the CM HAF case with its LED fans, loud aesthetics and acoustics and its overall design that made dust a real problem. So I switched to this baby, the nanoxia deep silence 6. Filtered intakes everywhere, clean aesthetics, sound dampening and enough space for all the expandability I could ever want (in all aspects, it can fit every mobo or radiator config or amount of harddrives that I could ever need). Equipped with 7 EK Vardar fans and 3 of the stock fans in the top (which don't spin at all in idle and are only there if the need for additional cooling comes up) it is extremely quiet and actually cooler under load than my old case. It's truly gigantic (keep in mind that this is a full sized ATX mobo in the following pictures) and has been a real pleasure so far.
more pics, and that's probably the end. Sorry for the potato camera, but the Moto G is the best (and only) thing I have in terms of picture quality.
Operation Core 2 Extreme revivial for just 217USD
Disclamer for this build log:
(For anyone who thinks that I am stupid to waste money on this project should leave this tread now. (yes I am talking to you))
Reasons:
If you guys seen my rig in my profile, I am only running a Core 2 Duo system as my daily PC
- CPU Intel Core 2 Duo E7200 2.53GHz
- Motherboard MSI P31 Neo 2 LGA 775
- RAM 2 GB OCZ Lan party DDR2 800 kit CL4-4-4
- GPU POV Geforce GT8600 512MB DDR2
- Case CoolerMaster Centurion 5
- Storage Maxtor 60GB, WD 250GB both IDE ,WD 320 SATA2
- PSU Vantech ION2+ 500w PSU
- Display(s) HP 20" 4:3, Philips 19" 4:3 monitors
- Cooling stock LGA775 Intel cooler, CoolerMaster 120mm case Fan 80mm front intake
- Keyboard Microsoft X6 Sidewinder
- Mouse Microsoft Lasermouse 6000
- Sound Creative X-Fi USB External
- Operating System Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit
The CPU is showing signs that it is dying as the CPU load always hit 100% at startup of OS and thats even with a clean OS upgrade from Win XP 32bit to Win 7 64bit and a remount of the cooler and reapply of thermal paste didnt help much at all.
I have swapped to a older E6240 2.13GHz Core 2 Duo and now the CPU load is stable when just booted.
The OS is in the WD 320GB HDD which was a hand me down from my dad's PC when he go the new i5 4460 rig
The aim is to renew the PC with some parts which i have got for cheap from friends, ebay and from sources I shall not mentioned.
I found a shop at my local PC haunt which has the Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6700 for like 50 Singapore dollars which is estimated for around 40 USD
And there is still shops selling brand new G41 mobo like the Gigabyte G41M-Combo which will allow me to use up to 8GB DDR3 for 110 Singapore dollars or around 88 USD
Corsair Vengence DDR3 8GB Kit for 112SGD which is around 89USD
So in total will be 217USD or 272 SGD
But the price could be lower if i ask the boss of the shop for discounts
In addition to the CPU, mobo and RAM
I will also swap out the 8600GT for a Quadro FX4800 which I bought two of them years ago on ebay but one died so i still have one good working GPU
The Quadro FX4800 is basically the rebrand of the GTX260 but with 1.5GB of GDDR3 VRAM instead of the odd 768MB of the GTX280
Before anyone say "you dumbass, the Pentium G3258 will be way better!"
As mentioned in the disclamer, please leave this topic unless you want me to report you.
I do not play any recent AAA games, I just want to play old school games that I have like Mechwarrior 4 and web surfing but as I multi task, the dual core is not enough for my needs and 2GB is now a struggle when I open a few tabs on Firefox.
I will continue to updage this log when I get the parts on the next paycheck
I still need to send money to my parents and pay for my own living and travel expanses
The cooler is not yet in the planning stage but I have a feeling the current case will not fit the bigger cooler I am getting
the stock Intel Cooler will not cut it for the QX6700 even at stock speeds
So the cost may go up if i need to switch casing and get the CPU cooler
so I will have to pick the CoolerMaster 935 Stacker and CoolerMaster V8 GTS which are suppose to be in my future i7 5960X X99 build in the next or following year.
For now the Plan is to swap the CPU,Mobo,RAM and GPU for the above parts and retaining the rest
I will post photos of the current rig tonight
Thanks for reading
Regards

Operation: Intel Upgrade
Hello ladies and gentlemen! So I have had my 7850K for around a year now, and seeing as it's bottle necking my R9 280 pretty badly, I figured it was time to upgrade. So I have chosen to upgrade to an i5-4690K, an MSI Gaming 5 motherboard, and a Noctua NH-D15. Everything else is staying the same as it was previously. Right now I have the motherboard only (Pictures below) I should have the CPU and cooler by mid-March. Not a very eventful build log, however some people wanted me to make it. Here, I will document some benchmarks moving over to Intel, as well as temps. Though as APU temps are currently very difficult to measure I won't have anything to compare to. If you'd like to be tagged whenever I update this build log, please let me know. I will leave you with my gallery now. (Current build in my signature.)
I'm also in need of a name for this baby. Any suggestions?

New Builder Help
okay im a new builder and know nothing about building my own pc, so how does this build look?
Project Re-Define - Custom Watercooled Loop | Define R5
Introduction
Let me just state this now, this project was inspired by Akula and his Project Armada which I had stumble upon over half a year ago and since then, I have been motivated to build my own custom loop.
The project gets it's name for two reason, one of which is because I am Re-using all (if not most) of my component from my current rig, and secondly because the case itself is named 'Define'. So combining those two words in bold, leads to Re-Define...yes I am aware the name isn't the best, but its all what I can come up with.
Also I would like to mention that this is my first custom loop, and as a challenge for myself, I will be using Rigid Tubing alongside a heatgun.
The theme will mostly be black and blue.
