The never ending cycle of computer parts problems

$

Well I'm going to build a pc at the end of July and I have some struggle with the election of parts to it this is how far I have come

Cpu: Intel core i7 5820k

Cpu fan: Nzxt kraken x61

Motherboard: Msi x99s gaming 7

Memory/Ram: Hyperx fury 16 gb ddr4 2133 MHz

Storage: Samsung evo 850 250 GB SSD and a western digital black 1 tb

Gpu: still in progress

Case: Nzxt noctis 450

Psu:Evga supernova 850 w 80+ gold

Well as you see I don't know what gpu I want to use I thought first about using a Titan x but it seems like 980 sli will be a better option I don't know. Or maybe get a 980 ti.

I'm not so sure about the ram either so if you have any suggestions please tell me.

Fact of the day: my profile pic shows that female human horses also can have a boner.

Advice on my Budget Gaming PC Build

$

I'm in the process of building my own gaming PC on a budget of around £500 and at the moment at the stage of picking out the parts.

After doing some research I created a PCPartsPicker list that I think meets my needs - http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/hRYnqs

* Some parts I did choose mostly for aesthetics and personal preference reasons, like the NZXT Case.

* I already have the graphics card in my possession, so that part want be changed at the moment.

At the moment I do have some questions that I need help with and would like some advice:

- I'm not sure whether if i should some some extra on the 80+ Bronze edition of the EVGA supply , would make any sort of difference to the performance?

- Would the Gigabyte GA 970 UD3P board be good enough to OC the FX 6300 to possibly 4.4GHz or more?

- Also would it be better if I save some money and get CPU cooler like the  Hyper 212?

- Would the Corsair water cooler provide better cooling that would be worth the price difference?

Thank you for any advice!!!

I figured now would be a great time to stop lurking and start posting on the forum here, as I am starting a new PC build for the next few weeks to come.

I am going off to University next year, and wish to have a no-compromise, small form factor, beast of a machine to bring with me to go to some LAN parties and also save on space while living is residence on campus. This is not my first PC build, so I do have some experience putting a system together, but building in the NCase M1 is going to be an exciting challenge for me to take on. I am currently selling my old system in order to subsidize the cost of this build, so I will be receiving parts in the next few days/weeks and will try to take photos as each part comes in. Some of the parts from my old build will carried over into the new one, such as the GPU, RAM, and HDD. Anyways, here is the build I have speced out:

CPU: Intel Core i5-4690K

Cooler: Noctua NH-D9L

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z97N-Wifi

RAM: Corsair Vengeance 2x4GB

SSD: Mushkin ECO2 240GB

HDD: WD Green 2TB

GPU: Asus GeForce GTX 970 Strix (already owned)

PSU: Silverstone 600W SFX

Future Upgrades:

GPU: Going for wait for the new AMD/Nvidia cards

GPU Cooler: Arctic Accelero Hybrid II 120

RAM: 16GB (2x8GB) - Not sure which brand yet, will decide when buying

Let me know what you guys think so far.

An ITX quiet all rounder, at last :)

Hellow

I recently started a build in the Lian Li PC TU100B (previous topic here : http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/357635-an-itx-quiet-all-rounder/#entry4883147 )and I indeed said that i would keep a build log.

So, here it is :)

First things first, here goes all the stuff i'll get inside the case :)

build_log_001.jpg

After carefully studying the PCTu100 i noticed something i never saw or heard of  in the builds i saw before inside this case. that is mounting the OS drive and a ODD on to the same support, wich save me a lot of room later on at the bottom of the case for the GPU and eventually some additionnal fans intake (my Dremel is ready   B)  )

build_log_002.jpg

build_log_003.jpg

build_log_004.jpg

After that, I replaced the original fan sith a noctua NFA 15, yes, it DOES fit inside this case (I vas also quite surprised xD) and i could even keep the dust protection :)

build_log_006.jpg

build_log_007.jpg

Mobo Time then, just the basics, and i placed it inside so I could plan the cable management before hand (first build log so i'm trying to be therall, tell me if it's too much) oh and the noctua LH A9 is awesome  .

build_log_008.jpg

build_log_009.jpg

build_log_010.jpg

build_log_011.jpg

build_log_012.jpg

Here are some global and inside shots before and during the cable routing

build_log_013.jpg

build_log_014.jpg

build_log_015.jpg

And now time for the GPU (so small, i was overwelmed by the fact if actually could fit in my hand xD) and the PSU (same story, its designed products sure are small :D)

build_log_016.jpg

build_log_018.jpg

build_log_019.jpg

Now, Phase 1 is done :)

Yep i'm calling this phase 1 because i'll not let this case as it is out of the box (the PC Tu) because even tough after a quick test i got 33° idle on the CPU and aroud 28-29° on the gpu (24-25 room temperature) I prefer to take a bit more time to optimize cable management and therefore airflow. As you can see in the picture below, cables can be routed in various places aroud the ODD bay so i'll be worling on that in a few days from now on :)

build_log_020.jpg

Cable sleeving is, after consideration, not useful, it'd only take more space and forbid some routing due to added thickness of the cables.

Noise wise, it was very, very silent  event though the short measuring i did were qith the side panels off.

BUT

because yes there is a "but"... four of them actually. Come on Lian Li, you provide a well build case and you put Aluminum feet under it ???????!!!!! I dig that having well polished half bulb feets can looks coll, but hey, couldn't they include rubber feets ?

So yeah, i am trying very hard to find a set of 4 rubber sound/vibration dampening feet to make sure this little baby does not scratch the carpet and hiss like crazy if laid on hard surface.

So, here it is, hope you enjoyed it and I'll keep this up to date later.

See ya :)

Hi Guys!I'm Fabio,a 17 years old modder from Italy  :D

I'm starting a new project with Cooler Master, and i wanted to post it on this important forum.

usually I post only in Italian forums like Tom's hw or Nexthw, but this time i want to show it also here.

in This my mod i will modify a n600 case by Cooler Master to make it look better with a lot of mods, like:

Modify The front panel with a new colors

create a psu cover

create a gpu backplate home made

Modify the gpu cooler

modify the aio cpu cooler (Nepton 240m) with custom tubs and liquid.

and other mods that,in reality,i can't explain in English as good as i would, you'll see :)

So its that time again that I did an upgrade, like any true hardware junkie I gotta get my fix, for the past 2 years I have had multiple builds, part swaps you name it, always getting an upgrade. Starting with an FX 8150 with quadfire 7970 in a super full tower to my latest build a 4770k with a 780ti crammed in a shoebox. Basically one size extreme to another, ITX fits my needs very well as I love the portability and I love the idea of cramming a ton of power into a small form factor.

My old builds :

Fire and Ice:

http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/37149-fire-and-ice-full-amd-7970-quadfire-rebuild-56k-warning/

Nuclear Football:

Well you can never have enough power. Also Size matters and don't let anyone tell you differently.

So whats the new build? well Ill let this little teaser image do the talking and let you get a taste..........I wont get the rest of the parts for a few days so hang on to the edge of your seat.

So I have been expirmenting with the different coloured fluids from clear to clear-coloured to pastel-coloured.  I have clear tubing so this is why I have done some changing.

Note: I'm seroiusly considering removing the RAM fans, but I'm waiting on some Red Light bars to come in that I special ordered, two of m previous ones went missing for some reason.  So yes I know some don't like the ram fans :)

Onw final thing to note is "most" of these pix were taken with the tinted window frame off. The smoke tinted window definitely makes things look darker.   I have future plans to try to make the current Pastel light blue a bit darker in the future and I may even try to make it blood red.

So what you think?  LIke any of these or do you want to see a darker pastel blue or pastel blood red?

Back Story:

I got in contact with a guy through my mum. He said he had lots of computer parts due to the fact he just upgraded. So i went over to his house and got a boot load of dusty computer parts. From first glance it looked like mainly old stuff, very dusty, not very usable. I took it home, cleaned everything only to find some really neat parts. Yes the stuff is kinda last generation but it still performs well, it wont be my main rig, maybe just a backup, or i could give it to my brother (or nah). So here we go, all these parts in the list below is what i got for free, don't be jelly.

Parts List:

Case: Silverstone Raven RV02

CPU: Core i7 2700 LGA 1155

CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-12S

Motherboard: GA-Z68X-UD7-B3

Ram: Corsair Dominator 4x2gb 1600 MHz

Graphics Card: Gigabyte GTX 660 OC

Power Supply: Corsair TX750w

Hardrive: Adata Premier Pro SP900 128gb

                WD Black 1TB

OS: Win 7 64bit

Fans: 3x Silverstone 180mm

           1x Noctua 120mm fan

Extras: Disc Drive (not sure which one)

USB 3.0 Front Pannel Slot thing.

Tweaks:

The GTX 660 OC has a custom fan curve. Fans start to spin at 20% once it hits 60 degrees celsius. On system idle the gpu runs at 30 degrees while 54 degrees at load, the fans slightly spin at 10% when the system is at load.

The noctua on the cpu is only a 3pin so i used the low noise adapter that came with it. Not sure how much rpm it is running at but its silent. Idle temps are at 24 degrees. Have not done load temps yet.

Havn't overclocked the system (apart form the factory overclock on the gpu) and im getting 58fps with temps of 54degrees in Eugene Valley Benchmark on Extreme HD (Ran for 1.5hrs). Not too bad for a system i got for free.

IMG_20150521_184337.jpg

IMG_20150521_184502.jpg

To Finish:

Just need to add some red leds to the system to spice it up a bit. I will upload some pics when i get a chance, havn't ordered them yet.

And yes i dont like the badges on the side window, but i cant be bothered to take them of because it came with it. Also how do you take them off, i tried a hairdryer, i guess try a heatgun.

I finally put the finishing touches on my gaming build (and got it 100% stable for gaming) and I thought you guys would enjoy it. I haven't seen that many people going sub-ambient 24/7, so I decided to try it using the Koolance EXC-800 Chiller and my wall.

Pics:

Specs:
 i7 4790K at 5GHz
Titan X at 1.5GHz
G.Skill DDR3 at 2.9GHz
HyperX Predator PCIe 480GB
Asus Maximus VII Formula
Corsair HX1000i
Koolance EXC-800 Chiller
3 x 24" Asus VG248QE at 144Hz
Restarts (desktop to desktop) in 15.3 seconds =)

Temperatures are good, and vary depending on how low the chiller is set at. I have a humidity monitor that shows me the dew point at all time (which I set the chiller to plus a 2 degree buffer). The chiller is usually set at 12°C and I play BF4 for a couple hours at over 144 FPS and my GPU stays under 25°C at this load and my CPU stays under 56°C at this load
Idle temps are at about 16°C for the GPU and 26°C for the CPU
Ambient room temp is about 21°C

My honey is finished, well not 100%

I build a new server :D

$

So I finally got the money need to build a new server. This server is going to be my NAS, a PLEX and Web-server hosting a lot of sites.

First, an overview of the old server.

It was made of an old HP Compaq sporting a E8400 with 8GB of 800MHz of DDR2 RAM. The storage were two old Seagate 320GB HDD's, that I have no idea how old are and an Intel 530 180GB SSD for the OS. To hold all the movies I used an external Buffalo 1TB USB3.0 drive. Needless to say it is only a matter of time before this machine dies.

Here are some pictures of the old system, with and without the properly mounted SSD(didn't have any velcro)  ;).

2015 03 11 17.50.16

2015 02 17 18.33.11 Copy

The new server is rocking a Xeon E3 1231 V3 with 16GB of 1333MHz DDR3 ECC RAM in a Fractal Design Define Mini (I'm sleeping next to it). For storage it has the Intel 530 180GB SSD and 2 3TB WD Green and a 1TB WD Blue. The budget wasn't big enough, so there is no redundancy, only nightly backups.

Heres some pictures of the new server.

2015 05 11 20.25.29 Copy
2015 05 11 20.27.13 Copy

For OS, the old one was my server, the new one is shared, so the others have some requirements.

The old was running Ubuntu Server 14.04 LTS, no gui, I had no use for it. But one of the others wants a gui on the new server, so the new server is running Ubuntu 14.04 with Lxde, mainly because I couldn't get OpenBox working... And it needs a gui that doesn't draw to much power from the system.

All in all I'm happy with the new server :)

Here is a picture of the new and old server besides each other.

2015 05 22 20.50.47 Copy

The old is being reused as an ARMA 2 DayZ OverPoch server :)

Two AIO Liquid coolers in my M1 Ncase (pictures)

$
0
0

I may be new to this forum, but i'm no stranger to computers. I recently built my new rig in the m1 ncase and I have a weird thing for AIO liquid coolers, and the m1 ncase is one of the only cases to have two 120mm mounts in the spots that can fit AIO coolers (even though it probably wasn't intended to have two) while still being small enough to my liking.

Unfortunately I have not made a build log for this, I do however I have finished pictures and would like to share.

Also pardon the messy room, my room gets bad every time I build a computer and boxes get everyone and my desk has tons of stuff on it all the time.

The Build:

  • Case: M1 Ncase (of course)
  • Mobo: Asus Z97I-PLUS mini-ITX
  • RAM: HyperX FURY 16GB
  • CPU: Intel i7-4790K
  • PSU: Silverstone 600w SFX
  • Storage: Samsung 256 GB SSD (programs & OS)/Western Digital Black 2TB (Files and Projects).
  • GPU: EVGA 980 Hybrid
  • Fans: Noctua NF-F12 iPPC

I'll also spare everyone extremely large images, I have a link here to the google drive with the higher resolution versions.

HIGHER RES IMAGES: https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B_tJIlh0Lks9fm5ZekRDbGd3c0J1Z2w2bWEwUU40RVZXMks4TVZVLUNUQlRINWlxQndqbWs&usp=sharing

side_view_m1_ncase_small.jpg

top_view_m1_ncase_small.jpg

Also had fun taking pictures of the mouse and keyboard just for fun. (and yes, the keyboard is modded with cherry mx green switches. my friend helped me with that).

keyboard_zoom_in_small.jpg

keyboard_keycap_small.jpg

g9_mouse_small.jpg

Just to clear everything up. I currently have the fans blowing outwards of the case. So they're an exhaust and all the holes act as passive intake making it a negative pressure build. However I've looked into getting fan filters for all the possible points of entry to reduce long term dust build up (even though it's a lot harder when it's a passive intake).

Also lets not forget temps, On the serious business side of things, in this config. I don't go above 54 Celsius under full load on CPU or GPU while the ambient temperature of the case is well below that. Any passive intake spot feels cold to the touch and the exhaust is an oven leaving all the hot air that would've been in my case otherwise.

Thankfully, (yes thankfully). The loudest thing in the computer is the Western Digital black drive at the bottom even under full load even when the western digital drive isn't in use, it's still more audible. Which means no matter (mostly) the scenario I will have a quiet PC during full load scenarios while still having a computer small enough to fit on my desk. sweet.

Also as a side note, I haven't weighed it yet, but this thing is dense. Like this thing is decently heavy for it's size. I'll have to weigh it and post that.

That's about it, if anyone is curious about anything or any questions let me know! This build was pretty interesting and I would say the hardest part would be fitting the GPU in. The current position it's in right now is the ONLY way I was able to get it to fit.

Project Size Isn't Everything: a mini ITX Watercooled Build

$

0

Hello

I recently sold my old build, and am planning out a new one. Because of the two twenty seven inch monitors on my desk, I have very limited space, and would like to do a mini ITX build in a CaseLabs Mercury s3 (with a pedestal) unless they make a pedestal for the Nova XM2. As of now (with bold indicating parts that have already been purchased), my part list is:

CPU: Intel Core i7 4770k (picked it up from a friend for $150)

Motherboard: Asus Maximus VI Impact (Newegg had an open box for $120, so I jumped on it)

RAM: 8gb G.Skill Sniper 2400 mHz DDR3 (was on sale for $52)

Case: CaseLabs Mercury S3 with Pedestal

PSU: OCZ 1000w Fully Modular PSU (will find sleeved cables later, purchased from the same friend for $70)

Drives: (2x) Samsung 840 Pro 128gb

GPU: Undecided- not sure if I want to keep my 3gb 780 or sell it and get a 6gb edition or titan

I plan on doing a loop with PETG tubing and two reservoirs, as well as two radiators in the pedestal. Everything, including the motherboard, RAM, CPU, and GPU will be water-cooled with nickel EK waterblocks. As far as colors go, I am thinking a black (don't feel like paying $20 for gunmetal) case with either red or blue coolant.
